Title: Trust Issues
Characters: Wayne Palmer (46), Lynne Kresge (54)
Rating: G
Summary: The new Chief of Staff tries to fix the mistakes the old one made.

Lynne drowsily turned her head towards the door of her hospital room when she heard a soft knock. Her eyelids fluttered open to see Wayne Palmer, the President’s brother standing in the doorway.

Wayne hesitated before coming into the room, seeing the guarded and suspicious look on her face. He licked his lips before making his way over to the chair next to her bed. She watched as he drummed his fingers on the armrest, careful not to make eye contact with her just yet.

“I’m glad to see you’re out of surgery and that your neck is ok,” he mumbled. She would have nodded, but it hurt to move. Instead she just stared at the wall. There was a crack in the paint on the ceiling. Someone needed to fix that soon.

“I know you don’t trust me,” he continued, “and I don’t blame you. But I just want to let you know that you can. I’m not Mike Novick. David is my brother and I would never do anything to hurt him. Or you, for that matter. Even if you’re not coming back to work, I would still appreciate to hear your thoughts and opinions.” Her resolve to not listen to this man wavered. Why should she trust him? She trusted Mike, and look where that got her. But his sincerity was almost winning her over. He finally looked up at her and she could feel the intensity coming from his eyes. When she didn’t respond again, he sighed and stood up.

“If you ever change your mind and want to speak to me, you know where to find me.” His glance lingered on her for another minute before he turned and walked out of the room.

That paint on the ceiling really needed to be fixed.

Title: Interrogation
Characters: Alberta Green (28), Victor Drazen (57)
Rating: PG 13
Summary: AU post season 1 finale: Drazen killed Jack instead and Nina escaped. The interrogation that takes place at CTU afterwards.

“Were you working for anyone?” Her question rang out harshly in the silent interrogation. His eyes didn’t look up from the table, nor did he answer her question. She exhaled loudly and interlocked her fingers.

“I’m going to say this for the last time. Were you working for anyone?” she repeated again, leaning a little bit closer. He finally looked up at her and she could see the pure malice in his eyes. He moved his head in closer to her until she could practically feel his breath. His black eyes threatened to penetrate her defenses and leave her vulnerable.

“You said it was the last time 4 times ago.” He whispered in an amused tone. She smacked the table and pushed her chair back roughly. He laughed, loudly and mockingly. “What, did you think I was actually going to give you an answer? Pretty big disappointment.” He smirked.

“Well, here’s what I can tell you: I work for no one. Someone contacted me who also wanted to take out David Palmer and Jack Bauer. I don’t know who. They sent me Nina Myers. If you find her, you’ll find who’s behind pretty much every terrorist threat this country has ever faced.” Alberta raised her eyebrows and crossed her arms, stalking around the table three times before answering.

“I’m surprised you’re even telling me any of this.” He scoffed. “Why? I wouldn’t tell you anything that could actually give you a lead. If you find Nina Myers, you can find these people- if you break her. Of course that would be difficult. With the fact that you lost her and all.” He paused to rub one of his wrists.

“Ouch, these handcuffs hurt. Anyway, you know what I find really ironic about all of this? If it had been Jack Bauer who killed me and not the other way around, then you wouldn’t be stuck in this position. He would have captured Yelena and eventually you might have broken her. Well, too bad that didn’t happen.” She looked at him with loathing clearly visible on her face.

“I detest you.” He chuckled. “Really? I wasn’t aware of that.” She glared at him, before motioning someone to come into the room from the other side of the one way mirror. A security guard came in and pointed a gun directly at his temple. As she noticed the sudden fear that entered his eyes, she bit her lip to hold in a smile.

“What are you doing?” He asked frantically. “You can’t do this. I’m a key witness in a major security crisis.” She laughed. “Were a key witness, you mean. You’ve now told me everything you know, so I don’t particularly feel the need to keep you alive anymore.” She nodded to the guard, who lifted the safety catch on the gun and moved his finger to the trigger. Alberta turned to leave the room.

“Japan!” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. Alberta raised one eyebrow and turned around. His eyes opened and he looked at her slowly with a guarded expression.

“What was that?” she said in a smug tone. He seemed to realize something, and then nodded. “It’s where Nina Myers is going to prepare for the contingency plan, in the case that Palmer didn’t die. It’s set to take place within the 24 hours after the first event.” Her eyes widened as she checked her watch, and then raced to the door and punched in the code to unlock it. She had no time to think about the fact that his smile was the one of a cat who had just eaten the canary.

When she was fired for providing the government for false information about a national security crisis involving terrorists the next day, Victor Drazen was found on the floor of his cell with a bullet in his head.
